Fire prevention
Do not keep stacks of newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, oily
rags, old clothing, and junk anywhere in your home. These are so
readily combustible that they often cause fires. If a fire gets started
in some other way, these provide quick-burning, extra fuel, increasing
the size and danger of the fire. Store oily rags in labeled, sealed,
all-metal containers. Try to buy fireproof and fire-resistant materials
for your carpeting, upholstery, mattresses, and drapes and curtains. No
aerosol can should be punctured or burned and always keep it away from
heat. Sleep with your bedroom door closed. This slows the spread of
smoke and fire into your room. Put a smoke detector near where you
sleep, for the sleeping hours are the most dangerous.
